Double Olympic and World champion Beatrice Chebet to receive honorary doctorate degree from University of Kabianga

The university described Chebet as an inspiration to Kenyans for her dedication and achievements.

Double Olympic and World champion Beatrice Chebet will be awarded an honorary degree by the University of Kabianga in Kericho County on November 14, during the university's 13th graduation ceremony.

The institution made the announcement in an advertisement published in a state publication on Tuesday, noting that Chebet will be conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters.

"Chebet has demonstrated exceptional talent and discipline in sports globally, particularly in long-distance running. She is a double gold medallist in the 10,000-meter and 5,000-meter races at the 2024 Summer Olympics and the 2025 World Athletics Championships," the notice reads.

"She is also the current world record-holder in the 5,000-meter race, the 5-kilometre road race, and the 10,000-meter race, among many other achievements."

Further, the university described Chebet, a Kericho County native who recently won gold in both the 10,000-meter and 5,000-meter races at the World Athletics Championships in Japan in August, as an inspiration to Kenyans for her dedication and achievements.

"She has represented Kenya in numerous international events, and her story promotes the values of hard work, resilience, excellence, ethical sportsmanship, professionalism, and patriotism," the university said.

Chebet is also among three Kenyan athletes who have been shortlisted for the 2025 World Athletics Awards after a stellar season of record-breaking performances and global titles.

Chebet earned her nomination for Women's Track Athlete of the Year after a dominant year in which she won both the 5,000m and 10,000m titles at the World Championships in Tokyo and set a 5000m world record in June. Faith Kipyegon, the 1,500m world-record holder, has also been nominated for the award.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi will represent Kenya in the men's category after being shortlisted for the World Athletics Men's Track Athlete of the Year, following his 800m victories at the World Championships and Diamond League between August and September.

The final winners will be revealed at a ceremony in Monaco on Sunday, November 30, as part of the World Athletics Awards 2025.
